About the Lab

The Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab (ZCBS), initiated by the Professorship of Architecture and Building Systems at ETH Zürich under Prof. Arno Schlueter, facilitates research and demonstration of future-proof building systems linking material, technology and the human occupant. Under the premise of the necessary rapid decarbonisation of the built environment, the lab allows experimental research for fundamentally new approaches and fast uptake through full-scale near-market demonstrators.

 Ongoing research includes:

• Active, adaptive facades for solar energy generation and utilisation

• Multifunctional building components that reduce mechanical systems, utilise low-carbon materials and/or harvest renewable energy

• Building-occupant interaction and learning approaches

The ZCBS Lab is a collaborative environment for research, development and education between ETH Zurich researchers, external collaborators and industry partners. It will also be instrumental in assessing the energy and sustainability performance of innovations emerging from partner research within the NCCR Digital Fabrication.
