Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab

Test cells, Zurich climate

HIN Level F

Two test cells in the Zurich climate can be found on the upper floor of the Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab. Their configuration allows comparative testing (i.e. of different heating and cooling system components). Testing includes, but is not limited to building component energy performance, as well as the performance evaluation of building integrated components (i.e. hygrothermal) and systems. Each chamber has a facade in contact with outside air with a south/southwest orientation to allow maximum exposure to sunlight. Additionally, the partition wall between the two chambers is removable to simulate a larger spatial volume. The internal cladding layer of the walls is also removable and replaceable to modify testing conditions. In room sensors measure data such as air and surface temperatures, humidity, air velocity, solar radiation and heat transmission.
